Few hours to spare yesterday so I took this down off the shelf from where its been gathering dust since I first read it, back before the Reunion Gigs.

Have to say on second read it is a bloody great read. The anecdotes and background to the early days of the band in particular are great. Horace has a gentle and understated writing style that really keeps you turning the pages and he evokes lovely images of the times and places.

Thoroughly recommend anyone that hasn't read it and with the faintest interest in music to pick up a copy ASAP.

Does Horace speak of the present or is it mostly a portrait of himself as a young man?

Fester is right - Horace's book is a very interesting read. He does a good job in trying to be fair to each member of the band. The book ends a year or so before the reunion. It's an honest account of what it was like being in The Specials and how it changed his life.

Agreed - just from his tour updates one can tell how effective Horace is at recalling and retelling any scenario.

It's so puzzling as/a lot of what we talk about would not have come about with out the schism?
Maybe Buddha is right and "Life is suffering" - with suffering meaning different things?

Hugh - never sure if you are extracting the wee wee or not but it covers Horaces life from school days up to the bands split and then a small bit about post-Specials life up to about 2007-08. If you havent read it do yourself a favour as the paperback is great value on Amazon -
