The Specials (#1): They Did Too Much, Much Too Young.
Bassist Horace Panter and vocalist Terry Hall of The Specials. I'd add that the band was opening for The Police at the Rainbow Music Hall in Denver in 1980, when I took this photo -- but, actually, it felt more like The Police closed the show for this legendary, British ska amalgamation (and it wasn't like The Police had a bad set, by any means, either). The Specials were so hyper-manic (like watching a ping-pong match), with a purpose (think black-and-white, inclusive, "2 Tone" movement), it was hard to accept that they fizzled out after only another year. Perhaps it was a case -- to quote one of their songs (albeit, one about teenage pregnancy) -- of them doing "too much, too young."
Back together, more or less (more if you count Terry Hall returning to the band; less if you count the lack of keyboardist and founder Jerry Dammers), the band continues to play shows. Just as long as they're not "too little, too old," I say...hell, they've never needed my encouragement to "go for it"--frenetically or musically.

Here is the original text and photo from Gregory Daurer's Blog and I appreciate and enjoyed this write up! I had first included a photo not from this at all, and regrets. Marigold. _________________ marigold

No, because you've got a reason not to like today's music (i.e. it's all commercial crap), whereas it was probably 2-Tone your dad didn't like. |
I remember my mum saying to me "How can you listen to this, you can't understand a word they say" to which I replied "So Who put the bop in the bop she bob she bop really means something does it mum?"....... I still think it was a great comeback!!! _________________ I got one art "O" level, it did nothing for me !! |

I was walking back from work after a night shift last Sunday morning and there were 3 kids, around 17 staggering up the road, clearly still up and having a slightly confusing but nice time.
Used to be sunday morning coming down, now I'm walking home from work and going to bed.
Staying up all night's much more fun when yer off your tits. |

Younger people you forget are so young because you still feel like a teenager, look blankly at you when you mention 1980s TV programmes or songs....
On the flip side - I can tell those same people off, they listen to my advice cos although I'm their mom's age I'm still 'cool', and I can be patronising _________________ "The state of your life is nothing more than a reflection of your state of mind." |

I remember going to Wreckless Eric and when he did 'Whole Wide World' I said to this girl I was seeing 'You must remember this one it was out in 1979'
She looked at me and said 'I was born in 1979!' |

Nope - not If this is the Vincent you mentioned. This pic is on a cool site - but I don't read Spanish.
Seriously Ally - this is one of the things I like about The Forum - by looking up your reference I stumble on all sorts of neat stuff - that I would never have known to follow otherwise.
Ms. Daughter calls It a "Self selecting group" so although we are all Specials fans - there is a lot of knowledge that becomes shared - so thank you. [no more embarrassing touchy/feely posts I promise]
I'm still laughing at your suggestion to heal Big Ska's back troubles! _________________ marigold |

I love the joke "What is Marine Corps foreplay? - Hey baby, you awake?"
When I roll over in bed I hear the baby's Cookie Monster toy - being set off and singing "Old MacDonald had a farm!" "Cowabunga!".............
That makes you feel old...... _________________ marigold |

When my friend Marc and I caught UB40 in NYC, we surveyed the crowd and declared them to be "old"--and then realized we were probably the same age as they were! D'oh!
(We're used to the ska crowds, which tend to be much younger in NYC! God knows what they think of us 40 somethings lurking about!)
+ + + +
By the way, the photo that Marigold posted is Clement "Coxsone" Dodd in front of his Brooklyn, NY record store/studio. When I worked a Moon Records in the 90s, we used to go out there and buy crates upon crates of Studio One singles and LPs (all repressings, mind you) to sell in our shop in Manhattan.
Coxsone's shop was kind of a mess, completely disorganized--you had to dig around to find the good stuff--and they would break out all kinds of treasures from the basement. And he had a working studio in the back of the shop and was occasionally recording local artists. The shop was in a pretty rough part of Brooklyn (East New York), but rudies and skins would make the pilgrimage out there...
Here's an article about the shop and Coxsone from the Village Voice:
