u will need a usb dj mixer, numark do ok ones but there are plenty on the market, some with ipod docks, scratch disks, cross fader etc, and your decks and audio mixer will plug into the usb mixer. so do a bit of research first, amazons a good place to start.
it works with virtual dj and traktion but forget media player
all u need is a usb/firewire cable _________________ adventures of a pork pie hat.... aussie zoo

i use the numark total control mixer, with numark cue le software.they come in a package together with everything you need.i'v tryed other ones but found this,to be the best one.its uses the all music files you have on your laptop,so you don't need a external harddrive.

I have used a Laptop for a few years now to DJ. The easiest way for me is to use the following-
LAPTOP WITH LARGE HARD DRIVE (EXTERNAL DRIVES ARE OK BUT CAN BE SLOW & UNSTABLE)
ANALOGUE MIXER (I USE A 12 CHANNEL WITH 3 MIC INPUTS AS I DO KARAOKE)
GROUND LOOP ISOLATOR (VERY IMPORTANT AS YOU WILL GET A HUMM FROM THE DIGITAL SIGNAL THROUGH SPEAKERS)
FOR MIXING SOFTWARE (IF ONLY PLAYING MP3 & NOT KARAOKE) I USE MIXMEISTER PRO. YOU PLUG THE RED & WHITE AUDIO LEADS FROM THE ISOLATOR INTO WHICHEVER CHANNEL YOU ARE USING ON THE MIXER, THE SOFWARE AUTOMATICALLY MIXES THE SONGS FOR YOU WITH NO GAPS & MATCHES BEATS PER MINUTE.
EXTERNAL USB SOUND CARD WHICH GIVES THE SOUND 'A KICK UP THE ARSE' AS A DIGITAL SIGNAL IS MUCH LOWER THAN AN ANALOGUE ONE.
Hope this helps mate. _________________ "It's not wise that you should be another man's footstool"

I used to use a custom music specific laptop supplied by Inta-Audio, I had:
An M-Audio Audiophile firewire external sound card (recommended for Dj's)
Traktor Dj software.
I ran it through a Vestax PCV-175 four channel mixer.
Most importantly I had an mp3 player (not an i-pod, volume output from headphone jack was shit on the early ones) for when your laptop crashes due to the heat. It only happened the once before I went back to hardware. I now use a Denon HD-2500 which looks like a CDJ remote but has a 40gig internal hard drive & a usb port to connect up to 4 other devices:
you can pick em up for £300 notes on e-bay and are an alternative to shelling out hundreds on soundcards etc..... _________________ Kifaru; Roots, Rockers, Reggae.

Definitely recommend getting a usb fan like skinheadface or even just a desk fan & point it at the laptop. Mine was just for dj'ing as well, but it was still not good enough when it crashed. It crashed quite regularly after that but I always had the hardware back-up ready. In the end I stopped taking it to dj with. _________________ Kifaru; Roots, Rockers, Reggae.

I just plug the laptop int o cd decks through the head phone socket and keep a cd cued in case anything happens it's more than addequate and i've a terrabite hard drive that's almost half full plus another as back up just check the byte rate of the mp3s as some are very poor _________________ www.myspace.com/fatpiggymc
